In the days before the Great Civilization, it had been a road to a temple-fortress where mighty companies had worshipped the dark gods, and ruled the land with a fist of iron. In elder days the town had been a fortress, and before that, an outpost, and before that a halting site on the road to Nowhere. The town of Theldon was an old one, six, seven hundred years old at least, it lay close by the High Forest, a realm of magic and strange doings. Ahead, what the necrons called a fringe-world, Kolops loomed. It had taken years to get here, in which Lain had lain catatonic, in the embrace of the sus-an membrane, letting the ship depressurize and fall inert, its original engine burn had been hidden behind a planet, and gravity had taken it the rest of the way. Stencilled on the side were high gothic characters describing its name. But for now, it fell like an asteroid, tumbling end over end, unseen and unnoticed. The dilapidated and hastily repaired Xiphon pattern interceptor that he travelled in, most of its weapons a thing of the past, was likewise recognizable, its heraldry, bright red and with a flaming silver sigil on its side, was laboriously re-painted to let everyone who saw it know that the Emperor’s Chosen were unafraid. To those who didn’t accept such notions, he was merely an infamous criminal.

Last of the Argent Swords, he had no cause left but honour, and that made him a very very dangerous man.įor those few who kept the faith, Brother Remus’s struggle and triumph was inspirational, a repudiation of the supposed perfection of the C’tani way. He had taken the title of Emperor’s Knight, it seemed only appropriate, but he was the last of his chapter left, that he knew of, so there was no one to object. He had a reasonable claim to be the most wanted man in the so-called Great Civilization. He had fought the necrons for at least five hundred years.

There were some like him who had abandoned their ways entirely, and others who tried to buy the approval of the new upstarts, who cooperated. There were times when Remus felt like a living relic.
